Garden District Public Consultation to begin January 2014
This Tuesday (14th), Edinburgh based property development company Murray Estates, will begin a number of public consultation events as it displays its proposals for Edinburgh's Garden District.
The Garden District in West Edinburgh represents a £1billion investment that would create new communities providing 3,500 family homes, a new world class visitor attraction - the Calyx, along with a new community stadium to compliment the new National Sports Performance Centre.
The plans have been brought forward by Murray Estates as a response to the significant housing shortage identified in Edinburgh, where the council's own 'Housing Need and Demand Assessment' estimates that the city need to deliver 48,000 new homes in the next decade, with 19,000 homes proposed for areas outside the city. 20,000 of these homes are planned for brownfield sties in the city and with Murray Estates strongly believing that the Garden District can play a key role in credibly delivering the remaining identified need.
Speaking ahead of the start of the consultation period, Jestyn Davies, Managing Director of Murray Estates, commented: 'The start of this public consultation period is an important stage in bringing forward the proposals for the Garden District. The time has come for a serious debate on the future of Edinburgh's growth, with the Garden District providing a unique way to create new and sustainable communities, whilst taking significant pressure off existing communities as Edinburgh seeks to meet its significant housing shortage. The Garden District can provide family homes, green space, parks and amenities in a way that no other site in Scotland can, whilst doing it all in a planned and sustainable way that will be a world class extension to Scotland's capital.
'These consultation dates give members of the public and interested parties the perfect opportunity to learn more about what is proposed, and we look forward to welcoming them to one of the five events we have planned this month.
